A note before reading: This is my review of the newest model of PetSafe’s self-cleaning litter box, the ScoopFree Crystal PRO, not the Legacy version, which has a similar name.
*(I received this product for free through the Amazon Vine Program for testing and review, but all opinions here are my own.)
What Is the ScoopFree Crystal Pro?
I’ve been testing the ScoopFree Crystal Pro for about three weeks. My cat used it for a week before stopping, but I kept testing its features to see how it handles waste and odor. This is one of PetSafe’s self-cleaning litter boxes designed to make litter duty as simple as possible.
Compared to other ScoopFree models, the Crystal Pro is an updated design. It puts the control panel on the front, includes a hood, adds an LED status light for tray life, and makes cleaning easier with a smoother interior and a removable rake.
My cat didn’t adapt quickly. She was suspicious of the hood and unsure about the feel of the crystals on her paws. I had to keep her old litter box out during the transition and even tempted her with treats to show her the Crystal Pro wasn’t a “monster.” She eventually used it for about a week but then stopped. I’m pretty sure the crystal litter was the main issue since she’s always been paw-sensitive.

How the ScoopFree Crystal Pro Works
Here’s how it works at home: your cat goes in, does their business, and once they leave, the box waits 20 minutes before cleaning. My cat weighs about 7 pounds and fits comfortably inside with enough room to turn around, so the box feels spacious for cats on the smaller side. After she steps out, the cleaning cycle begins automatically: the timer can’t be changed — every cycle always runs after that 20-minute delay. When it’s time, a metal rake sweeps across the tray, and I have to say it does a great job; it doesn’t carry the crystals with it at all.
Since the crystal litter absorbs urine, the liquid waste stays in the tray and dries out, which really helps with odor control. The rake only pushes the solid waste (poop) into a covered compartment, where it stays sealed off from the rest of the box. While the rake is running, a little rake icon flashes on the panel. You can also press the rake button to start or stop a cycle manually, I tested this, and it worked as expected.
The panel also includes a Health Counter. Every time your cat uses the litter box, the number goes up by one, so you can track litter box habits over time. Right next to it, there’s a single LED status light that changes color to show tray life:
- Blue = the tray is active with plenty of uses left
- Yellow = it’s getting close to full
- Red = the tray is full and needs to be replaced
You fill the disposable tray with crystal litter, and it’s supposed to last up to a month with one cat. I haven’t had to replace mine yet during testing, although I did test how to replace it just to see how easy it was.
Cleaning & Maintenance
PetSafe promotes the Crystal Pro as “now even easier to clean.” The inside has a smooth finish, which should make wiping down much faster since nothing sticks, and the rake can be removed for a deeper clean when needed. I found out that fully disassembling the ScoopFree is not as hard as I thought. The video below shows how I do a full deep clean of the ScoopFree Crystal Pro, including taking the rake out:
How I Deep Clean the Scoopfree Crystal PRO (Step-by-Step)
Even though my cat stopped using the Crystal Pro, I recorded a quick video showing how to replace the tray. It’s a straightforward process, and the video below walks you through it step by step:
How to Replace the Tray in the Scoopfree Crystal PRO
Pros
- Design & sturdiness: The unit feels solid and well put together.
- Odor control: The crystals keep smells almost nonexistent, even with the box in my living room, I barely notice it’s there.
- Waste compartment: Once the rake pushes poop inside, it’s completely sealed off.
- Disposable tray system: No scooping or scrubbing the bottom, since the tray is tossed out when done.
- Rake efficiency: The rake moves smoothly through the crystals and barely pushes any litter into the waste compartment.
- Noise level: Surprisingly quiet — my cat wasn’t bothered at all by the cleaning cycles.
- Footprint: It uses a small space in the house, unlike other automatic devices.
Cons
- Crystal litter: My cat didn’t like the texture on her paws and stopped using it. Cats with sensitive paws may not adapt.
- Hood: She was uneasy about the hood, though some cats may prefer the privacy.
- Locked waste compartment: You can’t open it to check inside, so it’s not possible to monitor your cat’s stool.
- Tray costs: The disposable trays are a recurring expense, though reusable options exist that could help.
- Size: The litter area is fairly small (14 × 14 inches), so I wouldn’t recommend it for large cats or multi-cat households.
- No reset button: The control panel doesn’t include a reset, which feels like a missed feature if you ever need to clear or troubleshoot the system.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
I loved the ScoopFree Crystal Pro. It’s a solid choice for busy cat owners who want a low-maintenance litter box with excellent odor control. It really does what it promises: you don’t scoop, you don’t smell anything, and you only have to think about replacing the tray about once a month — although I’m still not completely sure about that claim. I was honestly amazed to see how the waste collected in the compartment after a week was completely desiccated and shrunk by the crystals — there was zero smell. It’s too bad my cat rejected the crystals after a few days; otherwise, I would have kept using this device.
I wouldn’t suggest it for multi-cat homes due to its small litter space or for cats with sensitive paws like mine. But if your cat is fine with crystal litter, this system feels like a game-changer. Honestly, I would have kept using it if my cat had tolerated the crystals — the convenience and freshness are hard to beat.
