In reply to Linda. Hello Linda, for the pump to work it needs to be plugged, otherwise water won't go up to the surface and it would be just like a regular water bowl.

I have had my Cat Mate since October 2018 and haven’t had the kinds of problems described above. Mine does not get grimy, no debris seems to flow under or around the filter, it’s perfectly strong enough to do its assigned job and it’s virtually silent. I set it on medium flow (doesn’t need resetting), which keeps water moving, but not bubbling nor evaporating too fast, wash it about once a week thoroughly in the sink with a paper towel and dish washing liquid and I wash every nook and cranny because these are the places mold will hide and spread from. I took a permanent marker and marked the high and low water level locations so they are easy to see. The motor is disassembled and the impeller is washed along with the overall unit. None of this takes much time. I fill it with charcoal filtered water. The wall plug is warm, but no warmer than other plugs running motors. I have no complaints.
