In reply to Gloria. Hi Gloria, so far I haven't seen a feeder as you describe. The closest is the SureFeed Pet Bowl that keeps the wet food protected and it opens when the cat gets close the lid, it doesn't require chip or tags. The downfall is that you can't program it, it's a free-feeding feeder.

Is there a cat food feeder that is motion sensor open (without RFID – cat doesn’t wear a collar) and closes with a timer. I need something that will make the wet food inaccessible after 4 hours to avoid bacteria from food sitting out too long. I prefer plug in. I need something that I can set up before work and then the cat can’t get after 4 hours.

In reply to Sandy. Hello Sandy, for two cats that are good eaters it's necessary to set up two different feeders. The timer of the Petsafe is digital so it should be accurate about the timing when opening, you just need to make sure to set up the clock exactly at the same time for both devices, not one second later than the other. Now as I always tell cat owners, with cats nothing is 100% guaranteed. Cats are very smart creatures and if they are really determined to defeat feeders they will find a way. However, this automatic feeder is sturdy and very hard to break. Hope that helps!

Thank you for these thoughtful reviews and answering commenters’ questions! I have a similar question to Erin, about feeding wet/dry to my cats with an automatic feeder to take the humans out of the equation. We have two brother cats who are entirely food oriented, and meow all day for food, so that it’s very difficult to *not* reinforce this behavior (there is no time they don’t meow for food – the minute they see us or see us move it starts…) amd both are overweight already, so free food doesn’t seem a good option. They eat some wet and some “light” dry food.
I was thinking the Petsafe 5-meal might be good (it needs to be a sturdy one) and I could set it up at night when they aren’t around, with wet for morning and dry for afternoon…
Do you think this would work? How would it work best for two cats? Would I need to get two? How specific is the timer – would they open at the same time if I had two of them?
