FEEDING GUIDELINES
Feeding recommendations are for general purposes and provide a good place to start, but measuring the right food intake depends on several factors such as age, indoor or outdoor, breed or metabolism, and if any other extra food is given, such as treats or canned food. Also, the amount of food your cat needs may be modified in the following situations:
Kittens: 2 to 4 times more food. If your kitten is weighing less than 4 lbs or younger than 6 weeks, free-feeding is recommended. Pregnant and nursing cats: 2 to 4 times more food. Spayed or neutered cats: Up to 25% less food.

ANALYSIS OF FIRST 5 INGREDIENTS OF FROMM GAME BIRD RECIPE:
Duck: 4 stars. Good alternative protein source. It adds less water in weight than chicken.
Duck Meal: 5 stars. Concentrated source of protein.
Pea Protein: 4 stars. Good vegetable protein.
Turkey: 2 stars. Does not offer a high level of protein. It adds water weight contained in the muscle meat.
Dried Whole Egg: 3 stars. Good source of protein. The egg yolk is the highest known source of Choline, essential to disperse cholesterol throughout the cat’s system and support brain and liver functions. Whole eggs include shells but are not hard to digest when they are made a very fine powder.

BOTTOM LINE
Fromm Game Bird Recipe is a maintenance cat food with a tasty mix of birds. The third ingredient on the list, “pea protein” is a good source of vegetable protein, but it could be further down on the list.
Although Fromm Game Bird Recipe is a maintenance formula, it only informs one out of 11 essential amino acids on their food’s technical analysis (listed only Taurine). Also, be aware that this formula may make your cat gain some weight. Also, the formula doesn’t mention Omega fatty acids in the guaranteed analysis.
When I switched my cat from Petcurean Go to Fromm Game Bird she experienced weight gain and a less shiny coat as well. I didn’t feed my cat this food very long. Gaining weight and less shiny coats are not good indicators. I would stay on the fence with this formula.
Important: Dry cat foods are not sufficient for a healthy cat diet and they must be mixed with canned wet food and giving your cat plenty of water at all times.
Robby says
Amino acids in this food, does it have them all?
Lorena Ávila says
Hi Robby, they don’t inform them on their food analysis.
Katie Vance says
Mt cat only eats dry food and drinks lots of water, she has a can of food once in a while and she is perfectly healthy. My cat doesn’t like most wet foods.
Lorena Ávila says
Thanks for sharing your experience Katie!
Maddie says
What brand of food will be better for our 5 month old male kitten. He is active and lean. I am trying to decide between Fromm and Acana? Also does it matter which formula/flavor matter among the two brands? Should dry and wet food come from the same brand? First time kitten owner.
Lorena Ávila says
Hi Maddie, for your kitten I suggest you Petcurean and Acana grassland. However, since you have a kitten I wouldn’t suggest the new Acana formula because it uses chicken giblets that I think it’s more appropriate for adult cats. I would suggest you to feed your cats with Petcurean and see how they do with it. What I personally do is mixing Petcurean with Fromm but you may not want to buy an extra bag of cat food. The reason why I choose to mix is the kibble shape of Fromm forces my cat to chew more which is good for her teeth. Petcurean kibble is round and small. Regarding the question of the same brand of dry and wet food, the answer is NO. You can choose the best of each brand for your cat. Remember to give your cat lots of fresh water specially since your kitten is a male. Also don’t overfeed him dry food, try to give him more percentage of wet food.

I have found the small round pebbles from Fromm actually make my cat chew less, and swallow the food… Which flavor of Fromm were you referring to that forces them to chew?
Lorena Ávila says
Hi Samantha, In my review I don’t mention this fact. Actually in the Pros I state that the irregularly shaped kibbles are small enough for small mouths.
Nico says
I have been feeding my 7yr old male cat this variety of Fromm for about 3-4 years now, his coat is shiny and his health is excellent. The problem with this food is it spoils very quickly, about 1/2 through the bag he starts shunning it and by the final 1/4 he really protests to the point thatbI often have to dispose of it. I can detect a strong, unplesant change in the smell, I can only imagine what it smells like to him…
Closing the bag tightly, re-bagging it in ziplocs and using an air-tight container all help (if you leave the bag open overnight, it will spoil by morning) but given the cost of this food, this is a real problem, especially since I have moved to an automatic feeder.
I need to find an alternative, any recommendations? He is very good about water consumption and shuns most wet food. (He’ll lick off the “juice” and leave the “food”.)
Lorena Ávila says
I recommend you Petcurean, it`s the dry food I use with my cat Sophie and she has been doing great since she started eating it last year. You`re right about Fromm, it`s a really good dry cat food but it needs to be sealed when temperature is warm.
Donna says
Can you refrigerate it to prolong shelf life?
Lorena Ávila says
Hi Donna, I made my review based on my cat eating this formula (which I didn’t particularly like), but I don’t know if you can refrigerate this formula as I have never refrigerated dry cat food. Sorry I couldn’t help you more with this.
Samantha Cease says
Also, will you be reviewing other flavors of Fromm???
Lorena Ávila says
Not at the moment.
Danica Kim says
Is this product ok for kittens? I already bought the bag and don’t wanna return it unless I have to haha
Lorena Ávila says
Hello Danica, the formula has been labeled as All Life Stages by the Manufacturer.
